The team were apparently looking at the Yankees' Kyle Higashioka at some point too. With all that in mind, they brought in Martinez through the Cuban government.

Martinez had to be registered as the development deals have a limit on them otherwise the players walk free.

Martinez has never really set things alight for me. I rate Kota Ishibashi and Yuya Gunji as better prospects.

I think you're right about there being challenges but the good thing is a lot of the guys he's catching for now are guys he's caught for on the farm for the past few years. I think worst case, they shift him to the outfield if his bat keep performing like it has.Scott Mhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09759039538785495184noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1628842770475289094.post-52505168976622686962020-07-05T06:55:36.285+10:002020-07-05T06:55:36.285+10:00I was very surprised last night (7/4) to see a non...I was very surprised last night (7/4) to see a non-Japanese catcher come into the game. What can you tell me about Ariel Martinez? Looks like he's been a developmental player for a couple years. I can see why Chunichi would try thinking outside of the box at catcher, they've had trouble developing players at that position. How much of a prospect is he? Is there hope of him being an starter? I remember it being difficult for Kenji Johjima to be a foreign catcher for the Mariners, not an identical situation, but I could see there being similar challenges for Martinez.MoeyoCDhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06343345114868443687noreply@blogger.com
